Once
A few weeks ago I finally watched Once, a movie which was recommended to me by multiple people. It’s a lovely story which shows the musical connection between a female and male musician, and their short time together. The girl (they don’t give the characters names) is originally from the Czech Republic, and I especially enjoyed all the scenes where she spoke in Czech without translation. It was interesting to understand what she said, while knowing that the guy and most of the audience was only guessing based on her body language.
I am delighted to say that a song from this wonderful movie, Falling Slowly, received recognition last night in the form of an Oscar. It’s nice to see a well-done low budget film infiltrate the glamour and pompous nature of Hollywood’s awards.
Sadly, Persepolis did not receive recognition and was instead beat out by Ratatouille. I saw both, and Ratatouille was fun, but definitely was not better then Persepolis. Persepolis was thought provoking, and reminded me how fortunate I am to live in a country with the freedoms we have. The use of black and white was also stunning, in that I had not realized a movie could have so much visual depth while only using two colours. Baby steps, I suppose.

I was totally excited for them to win an Oscar. It was a beautiful song and movie.
the Frames have been my favourite band for like 8 years! It is soooo weird that Glen won the oscar (with Marketa). I have seen them/him in concert like 6 times or so, the last time being in Montreal. It was weird to see how after all these years they clearly broke into the Canadian scene (they have been huge in Ireland since before I knew about them). Glen was clearly smitten at the concert, by the reception they got. It was quite charming.
And you are right on with Persopilis! Personally, I didn’t like Ratatouille. i liked the concept, but the movie was lacking. Persopilis, however, was great!! I haven’t read the graphic novel, but the movie really was super. That is too bad.
Those are my 2 cents, anyways.
