Chestnuts

With Christmas music all around I have become suddenly aware of the commonly used line “Chestnuts roasting on an open fire”. In Paris there were people on many corners, selling chestnuts roasted over portable fires. In my efforts to be adventurous I thought I would give them a try, and I was extremely disappointed. This experience is ruining my joy of Christmas music, and I am attempting to understand how anyone could possibly think roasted chestnuts was a good idea? Perhaps it was more the smell and activity rather than the taste that attracted song writers?

This specific chestnut I picked up in Lyon and carried it around until Nice. I hadn’t seen a chestnut before, and found it strangely intriguing. I wanted to cut it open and see the inside, but in the meantime I enjoyed the smooth feel of it in my hand.
